Car seats, belts and barriers oh my....
Dogs should be secured in your car for many reasons, including that they can be a huge distraction to you when driving and we all know what distractions can do. They jump in your lap, they eat things you don't want them too, and basically require you to take your eyes off of the road.
It may sound silly to put your dog in a car seat or seatbelt, but you have to think that the same reasons you need seatbelts are the same reasons your pet needs one. During an accident big or small , your pet can go flying. In addition to protecting your pet from injury during the accident, after the accident your beloved pet won't go wondering off the scene and get lost or worse, run into traffic.
For small dogs we suggest (although these can be used with any size dog): Car seats or a seat belt attachment.

Car seats
Small dogs ride more comfortably in a pet car seat, they position them high enough to see out the window without distracting the driver. Click here for a great car seat. This one can also hold treats and toys.
This is Cordelia in her carseat. I know this pic was not taken in the car but she loved it. She could see everything and would curl up and sleep all cozy in the car.
For large dogs we suggest: Barrier Gate (although these can be used with any size dog)
If you have a SUV or stationwagon, we highly recommend a barrier gate for the back of your vehicle. Click here for an example of a good barrier gate. These cost between $50 to $85. This way you can put a comfy blanket in the back and your pet will stay safely in the back. This is especially important for large dog owners for many reasons, like after an accident, paramedics and firemen will be stopped from helping you if they are approached by a large dog. Your dog may become aggressive due to being scared and some dogs are just aggressive of strangers approaching their owners. You can also get spill proof dog bowls for their area for longer car rides. And if I haven't said anything yet to convince you of why you must have restraints for you dogs in the car, think about not having dog hair all over every inch of you car. That'd be great right, now go buy one.
